Ethos and Safeguarding

The ethos for CEW is designed to help participants to develop and share their writing and to make positive and useful contributions to others.

All members of CEW are encouraged to abide by the following:-

Equal time: Each author has equal time to workshop and reviewers also have equal time to offer their notes.

Respect: Respect others and what they may be experiencing. Please include a trigger warning at the top of any piece likely to cause distress, including topics such as: discrimination, sex, physical or psychological violence. This is subjective so please adapt to feedback.

Repetition: Reviewing should be on a once-and-done basis. Positive points can be mentioned again in support of recognition. Otherwise, if you have a comment that’s already been mentioned by another reviewer, please choose something else to say. Repetitive negative comments can be demotivating and keep the group from finding a variety of thoughts and questions.

Regular writing: All participants are encouraged to write regularly – presenting new or revised work for most meetings during CEW term times.

The ethos should engender support and respect for members. Getting a balance is a core to success so if you have any comments on the above, please express them in writing to the email below.

If you feel the ethos has not been followed in any meeting, then please email safeguarding@cuttingedgewriters.org
NB this email is distributed to all the current officers of CEW who are Simon Watts, Maggie Cammiss and Steve Morgan at present.
